FAQ

What is the difference among a producer or distributor?

The movie is made by a producer. The movie is distributed by a distributor. A distributor can distribute the movie to theaters or other companies such as Netflix. Distributors buy movies directly from producers. Then they sell them to theaters, cable channels, or streaming services.

Distributors have to negotiate with theater owners over where their movies should play. This means that certain movies might be more expensive at some theaters than others. Distributors with multiple theaters are a good choice if your movie needs to be seen by as many people.

Why do so few independent films ever get distributed?

Indie filmmakers tend to assume that distributors will buy their films.

Because they love the work, distributors will likely buy their films.

But, it is very rare that this happens. Distributors often profit from independent filmmakers.

They may delay a film's release until after the awards season is over.

They might delay the release of low-budget films until after the summer blockbuster series has begun.

Distributors try to keep films out of the hands of audiences until they've spent hundreds on tickets, popcorn, and candy.

They don’t want to miss out on these profits.

What are the steps to starting my own distribution company

No. No.

Even though you might not be distribution films for other people, there are still rules.

You cannot charge different prices to different theaters. And you can't charge different fees to different customers.

Your services cannot be sold to any company.

It consists of 2,711 stars embedded into the sidewalk along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents someone who contributed to motion pictures, television, radio, theater, music, or some aspect of popular culture. There are currently 1,922 living persons listed on the HWOF.

You will need to submit your application to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in order to be considered for membership to the HWOF. This plaque is attached directly to the concrete base, in front of designated stars.

If a member of the HWOF has nominated you, or if your contributions are significant to films, television, radio or theatre, or any other part of popular culture, you can apply for a Star. A committee evaluates the nominations and decides whether to approve them. If they decide to approve, they write a letter to the address of the applicant explaining their decision. A second letter confirms acceptance if the nominee accepts the nomination. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce will then pay $25. This money is forwarded to the Department of Cultural Affairs of Los Angeles.

The department issues the Hollywood Chamber of commerce a check, payable to it. The check is sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the application submitted by the artist or organization. The fee is then paid to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce at $12.50. The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs gets the rest.

Once an artist has received their star, he/she is eligible to be listed in the HWOF. To be eligible for the HWOF, the artist must pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce any balance. The amount due depends upon how many years ago your first nomination was. For example, $15,000. Suppose you were first nominated as a nominee in 1990. If you were nominated for the first time in 1990, you would owe $15,000.

You will need to contact Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in order to be removed from the HWOF. They will remove you from the list.

How old does one have to get a star on the HWOF?

Nominations are open to anyone over 18 years of age. To be eligible for a star, you must still be alive. After receiving a Star, one can still be Nominated for another star after ten Years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

Nominating you can be done by family members. If no relatives are living, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce may place a memorial stone in front of your star.

Why not just have stars on every street?

The HWOF does not intend to be a historical monument. It's meant to be a tribute to those who have contributed to film history.

What happened to the stolen stars? The thieves took approximately 1,200 stars. Each star weighs between 250-300 lbs, so if you add up all the weight, that comes out to about 4 tons worth of stars!
